Have you ever felt stuck between where you started and where you want to be? This is when your mind starts to "wander and wonder." I call this the GAP.
- Am I even on the right path?
- Is this what I am supposed to be doing?
- Why am I questioning something that I was so eager to start?
The GAP can either be a distraction or an opportunity. It can generate different thoughts and feelings for each Shape, such as restlessness, boredom, loneliness, or fatigue.
This is when hitting the PAUSE button to embrace your Rectangle is such a critical part of your journey. This is a conscious decision; however we are sometimes thrust into Rectangle mode unconsciously. How do you know the difference?
A conscious choice to embrace your Rectangle means you are aware, clear minded, and in control. You call a time-out to evaluate where you started, where you are, and where you are going. Then ask yourself these two questions:
1. Am I simply in a "Building Stage" and need to keep building?
2. Or is it time for a "Turning Point?"
The Rectangle is THE KEY to personal change and growth. If nothing else, recognize when you are in Rectangle mode and find someone who will listen as you talk it out. Often you won't know what you think or what you should do until you have a safe sounding board to explore your thoughts and feelings.
Next, I highly recommend you read our new book, Communicating Beyond Our Differences. There's a deep dive into the Rectangle that will help you learn to navigate your journey that will require both "Building Stages" and "Turning Points."
