You’ve probably heard that it’s harder to take the first step than it is the second, and the third, and so on. But did you know that it can be as equally hard to stop or change direction when you are already moving?
It’s called inertia. Simply put, inertia is something that makes it hard to start moving, stop moving, or change direction.
According to Merriam-Webster online dictionary, inertia is the property of matter that resists change in its state of rest or motion.
In the city of Wilmington, North Carolina, where I live, we have an international sea port. It is common in our area to see large container ships making their way along the Cape Fear River to access the Atlantic Ocean.
The large container vessels appear to move at a slow pace, especially compared to the jets taking off at our local airport, ILM. Both are in a state of motion. Both take an incredible amount of power to start their journey and end their journey. One has mass. The other has speed. Once on their separate journeys they have momentum. Momentum is easier to maintain, than to change.
This is yet another reason why change is hard. To start, stop, or do something differently means you are literally going against an inherent trait when it comes to movement. That's why the Rectangle is so important. It truly is your KEY to change and growth.
When you learn to use the Rectangle as a learned skill set, you will know when and how to start, stop, or change your momentum and direction, even if it's not something you would naturally do.
